FCC Faces MRC Petition Against ABC’s License Renewal

1 month ago 0

The Media Research Center (MRC) has urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) not to renew ABC’s licenses, arguing the network operates like a “partisan cable network.” MRC claims ABC spreads falsehoods and suppresses journalism, petitioning the FCC to hold Disney-owned ABC accountable. Broadcast licenses, as MRC President David Bozell notes, are privileges in exchange for serving public interest.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr indicated in April that eight ABC-owned stations need to prove they operate in the public interest. ABC’s licenses were originally set for renewal between 2028 and 2031, but the process was expedited by Trump’s FCC. Stations like KABC-TV, KGO-TV, and WABC-TV are involved.

In its 27-page petition, the MRC cited over 50,000 hours of ABC programming, highlighting alleged bias. ABC’s lineup includes “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “World News Tonight,” with criticism pointing to political leanings in shows like “The View.”

While acknowledging ABC’s First Amendment rights, the MRC argues it shouldn’t use public spectrum to express opinions, citing alternative platforms available. ABC has responded with ads urging viewers to support their license renewals, with over 100,000 public comments filed through the FCC’s system.

The FCC is investigating “The View” under its equal time policy after Senate candidate James Talarico’s appearance. Disney, associating “The View” with bona fide news, claims exemption from equal time rules.

Bozell has contested this, providing evidence to counter ABC’s exemption claim. He argues “The View” supports Democratic candidates and interests. MRC will submit extensive documentation supporting its petition, asserting ABC’s misrepresentation and censorship concerns.
