Morocco Advances in World Cup After Penalty Shootout Drama Against Netherlands

In a thrilling match in Guadalupe, Mexico, Morocco eliminated the Netherlands from the World Cup with a 3-2 victory in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. Ismael Saibari scored the winning goal in the shootout. The decisive moment came when goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s attempt, allowing Saibari to score the winner as Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen guessed the wrong direction.

Earlier in the shootout, with Morocco trailing 1-0, Verbruggen seemed to have stopped Soufiane Rahimi’s attempt. However, the ball deflected off his leg and crossed the line. Morocco’s coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, expressed gratitude, stating, “We know when we do everything on the pitch, it’s God that gives something back to us as well.” Ouahbi praised his team for giving their all on the field.

The Netherlands had a strong World Cup history, reaching at least the Round of 16 in the past 11 tournaments. They had a quarterfinal finish four years ago in Qatar. In contrast, Morocco made history during that tournament by becoming the first African team to reach the semifinals. This year’s tournament expansion allowed 32 teams to compete in the knockout stage for the first time.

Morocco’s next challenge is against co-host Canada in the Round of 16, scheduled to take place on Saturday in Houston. The Atlas Lions had previously secured a 2-1 victory over Canada in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. During the match against the Netherlands, Morocco maintained control for extended periods. The Netherlands opted for a counterattacking strategy.

“I think Morocco has gained everybody’s respect now,” Ouahbi said, adding that the Dutch style of play was a form of respect for Morocco’s abilities.

Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo scored in the 72nd minute with an assist from Summerville. The team celebrated the goal, but there was an emotional moment as Gakpo, who recently faced a personal tragedy with his partner, broke down in tears. In response, Morocco’s Issa Diop equalized in the 91st minute. Chemsdine Talbi delivered a precise cross, leading to Diop’s clean header that Verbruggen couldn’t defend.

Throughout the 30 minutes of extra time at Estadio BBVA, neither team had strong scoring chances. Netherlands’ coach Ronald Koeman substituted in Justin Kluivert, known for his penalty skills, but Kluivert missed alongside two other Dutch players. It marked the third World Cup in a row where the Netherlands was eliminated in a penalty shootout.

This match was the second to end with a shootout in the current tournament; earlier, Paraguay defeated Germany on penalties. The match featured the highest combined team rankings at the Round of 32, with Morocco sixth in the world and the Netherlands seventh.

Morocco’s coach, Ouahbi, encouraged his team, saying, “We need to be telling ourselves that no one can stop us. Nobody is unbeatable. If we get things wrong, we’ll go home.”
