The D.C. Council, in a unanimous decision on Tuesday, chose to postpone significant decisions until the following year. Council members decided against implementing over $400 million in cuts that outgoing Mayor Muriel E. Bowser had proposed. Instead, they opted to withdraw $150 million from emergency reserves, commonly known as the ‘rainy day’ fund, to address current operating expenses.
During the budget hearing on June 9, council members Janeese Lewis George, Brooke Pinto, and Robert White Jr. engaged in discussions to navigate the fiscal challenges. This move suggests that the council is planning to increase taxes next year to manage the city’s financial needs, as they aim to maintain essential services without making immediate drastic cuts.
