5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Mendocino County, Shaking Northern California

4 hours ago 0

On Wednesday morning, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Mendocino County in Northern California. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 8:10 a.m. Pacific Time, centered approximately seven miles north of Redwood Valley. This area in inland Mendocino County is sparsely populated.

Residents across Northern California received notifications from ShakeAlert, an early warning system designed by USGS for California, Washington, and Oregon. Shortly after the main earthquake, a preliminary 2.5-magnitude quake, likely an aftershock, was recorded in the same vicinity. Additional aftershocks measured 2.7 and 2.6 followed about an hour later.

Local business owner Alex Chehada of Redwood Valley Market observed items displaced from shelves due to the tremor. Reports of some injuries have been confirmed by the Mendocino County Executive Office, although the severity remains unclear. No fatalities have been reported.

Residents as far as Sacramento felt the earthquake, and power outages occurred in Willits near the epicenter. Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) map indicated that approximately 8,000 customers experienced outages coinciding with the quake’s timing. Although PG&E reported no damage to its infrastructure, the company activated its emergency response plan and is monitoring potential gas and electric hazards.

The USGS registered the earthquake at a depth of around five miles, with an impact alert level classified as yellow, suggesting that some damages might occur. However, the National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake.

In Redwood Valley, employees at Testa Coffee & Wine began clean-up efforts after the disruption. Police in Fort Bragg, situated roughly 50 miles west of the epicenter along California’s North Coast, are watching the situation closely but have reported no damage.

Mendocino County officials continue to assess the area for damage, although no significant structural damage has been recorded. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office has been informed about the earthquake’s developments.

Redwood Valley is positioned about 120 miles north of San Francisco and 140 miles northwest of Sacramento, highlighting the widespread impact of the event.
