New satellite images reveal Russia’s fortifications around the Crimean Bridge. This bridge connects the annexed peninsula south of mainland Ukraine to Russian territory. Ukraine has been intensifying its pressure on Crimea.
The images, shared on Google Earth and captured by the European Union’s Copernicus satellites, show floating buoys placed by Russia around the bridge. These images were taken between October 7, 2025, and June 16, 2026.
Sidharth Kaushal, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, stated that the Russian fortifications aim to slow down Ukrainian explosive-laden drones traveling in the water. This measure helps Russian forces more easily intercept attacking surface vessels.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has escalated its attacks on Crimea. It aims to sever the peninsula from Moscow by targeting Russian logistics sites in southern Ukraine with medium-range drones and fuel facilities critical to Russia’s military and economic efforts. Additionally, Ukraine has frequently targeted Russia’s oil facilities in various regions, including a refinery near the Kremlin in Moscow.
Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine illegally in 2014. The territory now hosts major Russian military bases and remains a popular holiday destination for Russian tourists, despite ongoing Ukrainian attacks. Kyiv is determined to reclaim Crimea and other regions internationally recognized as part of Ukraine, while Russia refuses to relinquish control of its current territories.
The Crimean Bridge, also known as the Kerch Bridge, links Russia’s Krasnodar region to the peninsula. Russian President Vladimir Putin inaugurated the bridge’s construction in 2018, making it a symbol disliked by Ukraine and a focal point for Kyiv’s military efforts.
The bridge has undergone several closures and reopenings, notably due to a bomb explosion from a truck in October 2022, which led to significant damage and fatalities. Ukraine has previously used explosive drones against the bridge, prompting Russia to augment defenses around the structure.
Russia has long used netting and buoys as protective measures around the bridge. Recently, Crimea’s Russian-backed authorities reported that gas stations would restrict fuel sales to civilians, allocating supplies primarily to government entities.
All outdoor events have been canceled, streetlights extinguished, and public transport timetables reduced. These actions indicate the effectiveness of Ukraine’s drone campaign in pressuring Russia in Crimea.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that Kyiv intends to isolate Crimea. Following this, Kyiv claimed it struck multiple targets near the Crimean Bridge, including oil sites and radar systems vital to Russia’s air defenses against threats.
Ukraine’s military reported that the recent weekend strikes damaged part of the Kavkaz oil port in Krasnodar and two car ferries supporting Russian troops in occupied areas of Ukraine.
