Jewel, the renowned singer and songwriter, once battled homelessness and severe mental health challenges before turning her life around. Appearing on the ‘No Magic Pill’ podcast, Jewel recounted harrowing experiences from her childhood, including her mother’s departure when Jewel was only eight years old.
After relocating to her father’s hometown, Jewel’s life took a difficult turn as her father became physically abusive, profoundly affecting her world.
Despite a tough upbringing in Alaska, Jewel vowed to avoid drugs and alcohol, driven by witnessing their destructive effects first-hand. She explained, ‘Some deep part of me knew to be deadly terrified of it.’
By 15, Jewel was living independently. She later moved to San Diego to care for her mother, but financial struggles forced her to live in her car when her mother returned to Alaska.
Faced with worsening panic attacks and agoraphobia, Jewel described her desperate situation, saying, ‘I didn’t have food, water, or gas for the car.’
Playing music was a family tradition she pursued from a young age, yet desperation led her to shoplifting.
‘I started stealing food and herbs for my bad kidneys,’ she admitted. This habit grew into an addiction, prompting a pivotal realization when she saw her reflection while attempting to steal a dress.
Confronting the reality of her situation, Jewel feared becoming another statistic, bound for jail or worse.
Inspired by the quote, ‘Happiness doesn’t depend on who you are or what you have. It depends on what you think,’ Jewel committed to transforming her life.
She adopted novel methods, such as documenting her daily hand movements over two weeks. This practice helped manage her anxiety, making her feel ‘radically present’ and less worried about an uncertain future.
‘Fear is a thief; it robs you of the chance to change your life,’ Jewel reflected.
Jewel’s story is one of resilience and growth, serving as a powerful example of overcoming adversity.
