Congress’s War Powers Resolution on U.S. Conflict with Iran

9 hours ago 0

A bipartisan majority in Congress has voted in favor of a war powers resolution to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities with Iran. This decision was supported in the Senate by a vote of 50 to 48, with four Republicans siding with Democrats. These Republicans included Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, Susan Collins from Maine, Rand Paul from Kentucky, and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska.

The measure, though not legally binding, was approved by the House earlier this month. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, representing New York, commented on Congress’s stance. He stated, “Today, Congress stood up to Donald Trump and voted to end his costly, unnecessary, and devastating war with Iran.” He emphasized that the message is clear from the branch responsible for declaring war: the Trump administration should pull back U.S. forces from Iranian hostilities.

President Trump responded critically to the resolution, expressing on Truth Social his discontent. He wrote that lawmakers were trying “to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He accused Democrats of Trump’s Derangement Syndrome, speculating they preferred the country’s failure over granting him another political victory.

The timing of the vote is significant as the U.S. and Iran are in delicate talks aiming for a permanent resolution to the conflict. These initial negotiation terms have faced criticism from members of both political parties.
