At least 40 individuals have tragically drowned in France during the past five days, coinciding with an extreme heat wave affecting the nation. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu addressed this issue during an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday, highlighting the vulnerability of young people, many of whom perished in unsupervised swimming areas.
Marina Ferrari, a government official overseeing youth affairs, mentioned on French radio that these incidents primarily occurred in unsupervised bodies of water, including lakes and canals. She emphasized the risks associated with swimming in unsupervised locations during intense heat waves.
Currently, France is experiencing a significant heat wave impacting much of Europe, which began last week. Weather predictions indicate that Paris might reach temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius, nearing record highs. Central France could potentially face temperatures as high as 43 degrees Celsius, approximately 109 degrees Fahrenheit.
Over half of France remains under a red alert for heat wave conditions, signaling the highest level of warning. Météo-France, the national weather agency, anticipates “exceptionally high temperatures, both day and night,” with significant health risks.
Records for temperature, both locally and nationally, are being broken consistently, noted Mr. Lecornu. The ongoing heat wave in Europe is attributed to a “heat dome,” characterized by a strong area of high pressure allowing heat to accumulate over the region. These high-pressure systems can obstruct or shift weather patterns, facilitating cloud-free and rainless conditions.
This marks the second heat wave impacting France within a month, following record-breaking temperatures in May. The sweltering temperatures have also caused other tragic incidents recently. French news station BFMTV reported the deaths of two young children, aged 2 and 4, who were left inside a car on a scorching day.
