Recent shootings in Chicago resulted in at least seven deaths and 38 injuries since Friday evening, confirmed by police reports. These incidents led to President Donald Trump reiterating his proposal for military involvement in the city.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday morning, Trump questioned why Illinois Governor JB Pritzker had not sought federal assistance. Trump suggested that he could transform Chicago into one of the safest cities within one month, potentially making it among the safest within a year.
Governor Pritzker, seen as a possible Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, has consistently rejected Trump’s suggestions for military action in Chicago. His office did not immediately comment on Trump’s recent statement.
Previously, National Guard forces were sent to various cities under Trump’s administration, such as New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee, on specific missions to combat crime.
According to data from the Chicago Police Department, while shooting incidents have slightly increased compared to the previous year’s first half, overall violent crime rates have generally decreased in recent years, following national trends.
Based on preliminary reports from Chicago police, there were at least 24 shooting incidents since Friday at 5 p.m. Among those who lost their lives were a 21-year-old shot on Sunday, an 18-year-old shot Saturday evening, and a 50-year-old shot on Friday.
One violent episode involved a crowd on a Chicago street, where 12 individuals were shot Friday evening. An SUV arrived, and its occupants opened fire, injuring eight men and four women. Their ages ranged from 17 to 47, with victims undergoing treatment at four hospitals. Another individual refused medical care despite sustaining injuries.
This incident coincided with Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. Earlier that day, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama greeted visitors at their presidential center in the city’s South Side.
Chicago’s Mayor, Brandon Johnson, expressed concern in a post on X, highlighting that what should have been a celebratory night for Juneteenth was marred by violence. He extended sympathies to the families affected, emphasizing that violence has no place in the city and those responsible will face justice.
Similar cases of gun violence were reported in other major U.S. cities over the weekend. Philadelphia saw two fatalities and two injuries early Sunday morning. In Cincinnati, a shooting resulted in three deaths Saturday evening. Police in Kansas City, Missouri, are investigating a Friday evening shooting that caused one death and left five others injured.
