Trump-Backed Outsider Poised for Win in Colombian Presidential Race

3 days ago 0

Abelardo De La Espriella, a criminal defense attorney without prior political experience, is on track to secure a narrow victory in Colombia’s presidential election. His win marks another triumph for conservative forces in Latin America and aligns with global right-wing interests, notably receiving an endorsement from President Trump.

De La Espriella, who garnered nearly 49.7% of the votes according to preliminary election results, transformed his image from a well-dressed Miami lawyer to a populist figure. He sported casual attire like soccer jerseys and straw hats during his campaign. He faced off against Iván Cepeda, a leftist senator known for his human rights advocacy, who captured approximately 48.7% of the votes with over 99% counted.

If confirmed, De La Espriella’s victory signals a return to conservative leadership in Colombia after four years under Gustavo Petro, the nation’s first leftist president. His win contributes to the broader rightward shift in Latin America during Trump’s second term.

De La Espriella, aged 47, conducted a vibrant campaign characterized by A.I. videos featuring tigers, his mascot, and intense chants against Petro. His approach elevated his status to that of a celebrity. He pledged to dismantle the left in Colombia and has requested that political adversaries be targeted by the Trump administration, prompting critics to label him as a potential autocrat.

His campaign platform echoes themes popular among right-wing leaders across Latin America. He promised to restore security amid concerns over crime, rescue Colombia from economic problems he attributes to the left, and take a strong stance against corruption.
