Recently, many beagles from Wisconsin’s Ridglan Farms have embarked on a new chapter of their lives. Rescued from a facility known for breeding animals for laboratory research, these dogs are now adapting to their new forever homes.
Experiencing natural elements like grass, stairs, and human affection are novel experiences for them. As Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War, shared during an appearance on “My View with Lara Trump,” the dogs are gradually realizing what it means to be a dog.
After a state investigation revealed alleged animal welfare violations at the farm, hundreds of beagles were moved out. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recognized the rescue effort as a significant achievement for animal welfare.
Adjusting to a new life outside the breeding facility can take time. Many beagles face challenges such as walking on grass, climbing stairs, and interacting with humans, which were previously unfamiliar experiences.
“When you see them shut down, that’s how they lived,” Misseri explained.
Misseri leads a team dedicated to helping these dogs transition. The organization also aids U.S. veterans by placing trained shelter dogs with those impacted by war’s emotional effects.
Jodie Cohen, Director of Adoptions, described their comprehensive approach. From assessing potential adopters to teaching basic skills, the program supports the dogs through every step.
“They’ve never been walked on leashes, so we have to carry them out,” Cohen noted, highlighting the simple yet essential lessons they impart.
Once the dogs are adopted, they join free group obedience classes. Adopters receive valuable supplies and the opportunity to forge lasting friendships. This program represents more than just adoption—it builds relationships.
Misseri expressed how the program transforms lives for both the beagles and adopters, stating, “The lives are being changed on both ends of the leash.” The organization’s mission, which benefits both animals and adopters, motivates them daily.
