Donald Trump stands as the most targeted U.S. leader recorded among both former and sitting presidents, facing threats nearly every two to three months in recent years. Over the past two years, Trump has endured three major assassination attempts and nearly a dozen other threat-related incidents, totaling almost 20 known threats since his first term began in 2017.

Throughout U.S. history, most presidents targeted in assassination attempts faced only one such attempt, with the exception of Gerald R. Ford, who survived two. Presidents who have faced these threats include Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, and John F. Kennedy. Four presidents—Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy—were assassinated.

Notable Incidents:

First Presidency and Campaign (2016-2020)

In 2016, during Trump’s first campaign, incidents began. In March, an Ohio rally attendee attempted to rush the stage. In June, a British national tried to grab an officer’s gun in Las Vegas. In November, Trump was rushed off stage in Reno, Nevada, amid false reports of a weapon.

During his first presidency, in September 2017, a man attempted to overturn Trump’s motorcade with a forklift. October 2018 saw ricin-laced letters intercepted before reaching Trump, leading to charges against William Clyde Allen III. August 2020 involved a threat near the White House, resulting in a short evacuation.

Second Presidential Campaign (2024)

The 2024 campaign saw additional threats, including a July assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, involving Thomas Matthew Crooks firing onto a rally, which resulted in one fatality. In September, another incident took place with Ryan Wesley Routh. Also, Iranian-backed plots, including by Asif Merchant and Farhad Shakeri, were thwarted.

Second Presidency (2025-Present)

During his second term, Trump has faced more threats. May 2025 involved a man in Florida threatening Trump’s life in writing. Further threats emerged in July and August, with men posting violent messages online. February 2026 saw an armed breach at Mar-a-Lago, while a major terrorism plot was uncovered in June targeting a UFC event at the White House.

As Trump continues to navigate these threats, the Secret Service and law enforcement remain vigilant in protecting the current president.
