Even after a devastating loss, moments of connection can emerge unexpectedly. Such moments, often referred to as “Godwinks,” offer hope and leave lasting impressions.
The term “Godwink” was coined by authors SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt, denoting a sign of hope appearing as a divinely aligned moment. This enlightening story, shared by Rushnell and DuArt, captures such an instance perfectly.
A decade after losing her father to a senseless tragedy, bride Jeni Stepien approached her wedding day with an unexpected yet heartwarming twist. Walking toward her future husband, Paul Maenner, she found herself on the arm of Arthur Tom Thomas, the man who had received her father’s donated heart.
As the church guests rose in Pittsburgh, emotions were palpable. Thomas, the recipient of Michael Stepien’s heart, gently guided Jeni down the aisle. This unique moment marked the first time they met in person. Thomas tenderly whispered a suggestion that resonated deeply with Jeni: “When I give you away, you can place your hand on my chest and feel the beat of your father’s heart.”
Time seemed to halt, allowing Jeni to reconnect with her father physically and emotionally.
That physical connection formed a powerful “Godwink,” impacting everyone present and illustrating love’s enduring presence.
“To continue blessing others”
Michael Stepien’s tragic death in 2006 deeply affected his family. Despite their grief, they chose compassion. Michael’s wife Bernice and daughter Jeni agreed to donate his organs, continuing his life through others.
Two days later, Tom Thomas, who awaited a heart transplant for nearly a decade, received the lifesaving gift. Doctors had warned him of a limited life expectancy. However, with this new heart, Thomas embarked on a journey filled with gratitude and purpose lasting for eighteen years.
The transplant allowed him to cherish moments with grandchildren and inspire others to embrace goodness daily.
Transplants often remain anonymous. Yet, through the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) in Pittsburgh, Tom managed to send a heartfelt thank-you letter to Michael’s family, arriving right before Christmas.
“Would you walk me down the aisle?”
Over the years, his gratitude evolved into friendship with the Stepien family. Flowers accompanied each occasion and holiday, as Jeni felt her father’s guiding love continue.
She wrote Tom a letter as her wedding day loomed, asking, “Would you walk me down the aisle?” Seeking his own daughter’s blessing, Tom received a resounding “yes.” This new chapter included not only Jeni and Tom but also the unwavering support of Paul Maenner, who embraced his wife amidst nationwide attention following their August 2016 wedding feature on “Fox & Friends.”
In times shadowed by heartbreak and division, this story exemplifies love’s enduring reach. Small acts of kindness ripple far beyond, reminding us of what often remains unseen.
Father’s Day serves as a poignant reminder: a father’s love continues guiding his daughter, and sometimes, the heart finds its true home.
