Claude Guillemot, co-founder of Ubisoft, a leading video game publisher known for franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, died in a plane crash in France on Friday. He was 69 years old.
Ubisoft released a statement expressing sorrow over Guillemot’s death, offering condolences to his family and loved ones. Details about the crash were scarce.
“Ubisoft was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Claude Guillemot, co-founder of the group and chairman of Guillemot Corp., in an accident. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement read.
According to the French news network ICI, the accident involved a Cessna 421 plane, which crashed around 6 p.m. in La Baule, a resort town. The plane reportedly banked and crashed as it approached the local airport, killing both occupants. The identity of the second passenger is currently unknown.
Guillemot started Ubisoft Entertainment in 1986 alongside his four brothers. The company became prominent through early releases such as Zombi and Rayman. Since launching Assassin’s Creed in 2007, Ubisoft has engaged over 200 million players worldwide. The series focuses on the rivalry between two secret societies throughout history.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows, released in 2025, transports players to 16th-century Japan to counter threats from malevolent forces. A review by The New York Times praised the game for its realistic portrayal of Japan and its engaging narrative.
However, the game faced criticism online for introducing a Black samurai character, Yasuke. Elon Musk commented that such inclusion was detrimental to artistic integrity. Ubisoft clarified that its games are fictional, although Yasuke is based on a historical figure.
Aside from Ubisoft, the Guillemot Corporation specializes in gaming accessories and audio equipment. Ubisoft’s film and television division is currently developing adaptations of its popular video game series.
