President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, claiming she repeatedly requested a photo with him at the G7 Summit in France. Trump expressed his frustration on Truth Social, mentioning this incident again after speaking with an Italian outlet.
Meloni disputed his claims to Reuters, stating she was “astonished” and that Trump’s behavior towards allies was not new. She questioned why the U.S. president acted this way.
“I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies: it is not the first time,” Meloni remarked.
The dispute has escalated with Trump blaming Meloni for not supporting the U.S. during the conflict in Iran. He accused her of failing the United States when it needed Italy’s backing to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Trump also mentioned his disappointment over Italy’s refusal to allow U.S. military aircraft to use Italian airstrips, calling this a logistical issue.
Italy previously declined the use of a Sicilian airbase by U.S. planes carrying weapons intended for use against Iran. According to Trump, despite significant U.S. financial contributions to NATO and Italian protection, Italy’s support was lacking.
In response, Meloni criticized Trump on Instagram, labeling his comments as “senseless” and “constant” attacks. She defended her decisions regarding American military bases and emphasized Italian sovereignty.
“As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped it,” she wrote. “My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy’s national interest.”
Trump once had good relations with Meloni, being the only EU leader invited to his 2025 inauguration. Both leaders share conservative values, opposing “woke” ideologies. However, their relationship soured after Trump’s tariffs on EU imports remained unchanged despite Italian efforts for relief.
Meloni further distanced herself from Trump’s policy decisions, notably in April when she condemned Trump’s remarks on Pope Leo’s Iran strategy as “unacceptable.” Despite this, Meloni has always opposed Iran’s nuclear aspirations and advocated diplomatic restraint against the regime.
Recently, U.S.-Iran relations saw developments with both nations agreeing to cease hostilities for 60 days. Meloni reiterated that Italy would not join the conflict, as stated to the Italian Senate in March.
As tension between the U.S. and Iran continues, talks in Switzerland aim to maintain peace following a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. An essential part of the memorandum of understanding signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian includes ending military operations, affecting regions like Lebanon.
These developments might impact the political landscape further as the U.S., Iran, and their allies navigate complex international relations.
