At 74 years old, Hugo Broos stands out in the World Cup not for his age but his direct approach. The South African coach, with a distinctive silver mane and furrowed brow, doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind.
Broos quickly set the tone at the tournament by addressing his critics bluntly. After South Africa’s 2-0 loss to Mexico, he rejected the criticisms from former players. “I do it my way,” he said, dismissing those who question his team’s performance.
Broos is not interested in participating in debates unrelated to football. When asked about Donald Trump’s controversial comments on South Africa, he chose not to engage, saying, “I will answer that question. We will not answer that question.”
The coach voiced his opinions on other matters, though. He remarked on the perceived favorable refereeing towards Lionel Messi, comparing it to the red card and suspension handed to his player, Themba Zwane, in the match against Mexico. “There was not even a VAR with Messi,” Broos noted.
South Africa’s World Cup journey continued after drawing 1-1 with the Czech Republic. Teboho Mokoena’s late penalty kept the team’s hopes alive. Broos faced questions on his feelings post-match and responded, “Why shouldn’t I be relieved?” He didn’t hold back on criticizing the Czech team’s long-ball tactics, suggesting South Africa played a more attractive style.
Broos also commented on the venues, notably criticizing Atlanta Stadium. Although appreciating the stadium’s appearance, he remarked, “only the grass is football.” His candor extends beyond coaching, as shown when discussing a cheeky remark about a potential statue in his honor. He suggested, “make it in wood so it will burn more easily when I lose.”
Ahead of facing South Korea, a win could secure South Africa’s place in the next round. With Broos at the helm, the team’s journey remains compelling.
