The body found this week in Lexington County, South Carolina, has been confirmed as that of Elena Katherine Moore, a missing fitness trainer, as announced by authorities on Friday. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identification of Moore’s remains, discovered near Old Cherokee Road and Northlake Drive on June 17. Moore, 39, had been missing since leaving a Planet Fitness gym in Lexington on June 11.
Instead of the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston will conduct the autopsy. This forensic procedure is set for Saturday. Officials plan to release more details regarding Moore’s cause of death by Monday, June 22.
Missing woman found dead after getting in a strange car: ‘Somebody knows something.’
Moore’s disappearance became a case of concern after she was last seen leaving a gym on June 11, 2026. The Lexington Police Department initiated the search following her disappearance. Those involved in the case, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), indicated that the process to determine the final cause of death may take time.
Authorities received a tip that led them to search near Old Cherokee Road and Northlake Drive. The discovery of the body happened two days prior to the announcement of Moore’s identification. At the scene, Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green noted that the clothing of the discovered body resembled Moore’s, matching the description seen in surveillance footage from the night of her disappearance.
‘The body found was wearing a similar green outfit,’ said Chief Green.
Moore’s friends noticed unusual behavior from her leading up to her disappearance, prompting widespread media attention. Her friend, Sondra Campbell, mentioned in an interview that Moore expressed fear for her life during a meeting on May 31. According to Campbell, Moore did not get the chance to elaborate on these fears.
Moore was seen last walking through a Publix parking lot at 100 Old Cherokee Road after leaving the gym. Before her disappearance, she had also shown reduced activity on social media for about a month.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office offered condolences to Moore’s family while urging anyone with pertinent information to contact SLED. The investigation into her disappearance and death continues.
