Crockett’s Endorsement Uncertainty in Texas Senate Race

4 days ago 0

Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett recently expressed uncertainty about supporting James Talarico’s campaign for the Texas Senate. In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Crockett admitted, “I have no idea.” Talarico, a state representative, became the Democratic nominee for the Texas Senate after a contested primary in March. He will confront Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in November’s election.

Crockett’s uncertain stance coincides with the Texas Democrats’ state convention, as Crockett focuses on down-ballot races nationwide. Although asked about her potential support for Talarico’s campaign, Crockett responded that she remains more concerned with other races.

“I have no idea. I am more focused on down-ballot races in general,” she told the outlet.

Questions about Crockett’s relationship with Talarico arose when she referred to her invitation to the Texas Democratic Party convention as an “afterthought.”
Crockett shared, “I had a missed call that I’ve not returned, nor have I listened to the message from Talarico. It seemed like an afterthought invite.” Though party officials contended that she has been invited since March.

Kendall Scudder, the Texas Democratic Party Chair, emphasized, “She has certainly been invited to the convention and continues to have a standing invite. We would love to have her there.” Talarico’s campaign confirmed they proposed to her as a keynote speaker.

Crockett highlighted a lack of unity within the party, particularly concerning Black voters. She expressed doubts about their enthusiasm without a Black candidate in a major statewide race. Crockett noted, “I’ve not heard a bunch of kumbaya. People don’t seem to be convinced at this point, but there’s a lot of time between now and November.”

Political scientist Grant Davis Reeher commented on the potential party dysfunctions. “This may be a preview of the party’s dysfunctions to come in 2028, if it can’t sort this kind of problem out. Crockett’s comments were damning in their absence of praise or support, and certainly do not help the party’s cause in the general election.” He continued, “As a Member of Congress, Crockett made a political living out of provocative comments that stirred up a portion of the party’s base and alienated others, so perhaps this set of comments isn’t that surprising.”

Crockett and Talarico have publicly emphasized defeating Republicans in the upcoming election. Her decision on whether to support Talarico could prove crucial in measuring Democratic unity and converting primary momentum into statewide success.

Recent polls illustrate a close contest between Paxton and Talarico. A Quantus Insights poll indicates Paxton leading Talarico by 45 percent to 43 percent with 7 percent undecided. The Texas Pulse Poll, executed by ReconMR and the Texas A&M Bush School, shows a tie at 46 percent, with 3 percent of respondents favoring another candidate.
