Trump’s Dual Endorsement in South Carolina Gubernatorial Runoff

Donald Trump recently issued an endorsement in the Republican gubernatorial runoff in South Carolina. He announced his support for both South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette as they vie for the GOP nomination. Trump shared on Truth Social that endorsing both candidates was necessary, stating, “With either one you can’t go wrong.”

Trump’s dual endorsement reflects his strategy to maintain influence within the GOP. Wilson’s bid for governor, announced in June 2025, follows Evette’s primary win, where she led a crowded field, with Wilson trailing in second place. Other candidates included Representatives Nancy Mace, Ralph Norman, and businessman Rom Reddy. Mace and Norman have since endorsed Wilson.

The runoff election has been intense, with both candidates trading personal accusations during debates. Wilson emphasizes his experience as attorney general and a combat veteran, contrasting it with Evette’s role as lieutenant governor. Evette, endorsed earlier by Trump, positions herself as an outsider and a successful businesswoman.

South Carolina hasn’t elected a Democrat as governor in 28 years. The winner of the GOP runoff will likely face Democratic nominee Jermaine Johnson in the general election.

Nationally, Trump’s endorsement power has swayed several GOP primaries. Yet, his chosen candidate in Iowa—Rep. Randy Feenstra—lost narrowly to Zach Lahn, a political strategist. This indicates variable success in Trump’s influence. Despite setbacks, Trump continues to back key candidates in state and national primaries. Most recently, Trump’s endorsement helped Rep. Mike Collins win the Republican Senate runoff in Georgia against a strong contender backed by Governor Brian Kemp.

While not invulnerable, Trump’s endorsements remain impactful in Republican politics, as seen in multiple primaries across the country, including Alabama and Georgia. However, as reflected in Rick Jackson’s win in Georgia’s gubernatorial runoff over Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, spending and local dynamics can influence outcomes significantly.
