A toddler was critically injured by a crocodile at a zoo in the United Kingdom. The three-year-old boy was taken from the crocodile enclosure at Johnson’s of Old Hurst Zoo in Cambridgeshire, England, and transported to a nearby hospital by staff.
Police have not disclosed how the child entered the enclosure, but they arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. The man, who is not connected to the victim, was deemed unfit for an interview, according to Cambridgeshire police. He was released on bail while the investigation continues.
The boy remains in critical but stable condition after sustaining serious injuries. Detective Inspector Verity McCann expressed sympathy for the family and stated, “Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family, and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time.” The investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Johnson’s of Old Hurst Zoo announced that their Tropical House, which houses the crocodiles, would remain closed until further notice as a sign of respect to the family. The zoo features over 100 animals, including lions, tigers, and capybaras, and has a long-standing interest in crocodiles, having cared for them for over 20 years.
