Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton surprisingly praised President Donald Trump’s management of the Israel-Hamas conflict during an appearance in New York City. Speaking with David Remnick from The New Yorker at 92NY, Clinton shared her views on various subjects, from the Israel-Iran situation to former President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign.
In a conversation about the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Remnick questioned Clinton’s longstanding endorsement of the two-state solution. He highlighted the challenges facing such a solution, noting that neither the Israeli nor the Palestinian political landscapes currently support it.
Remnick said, “A two-state solution, once fiercely advocated for, seems impossible now. Am I wrong?”
Clinton responded, “You might be, but you might not be. Here’s why. I’m going to say something positive about Trump — so hold on.” She elaborated that Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza provides a security pathway for Israel, reconstruction for Gaza, and potential self-determination for Palestinians. Clinton noted that despite opposition due to its origin, it’s currently the sole actionable plan.
Clinton stressed that implementing Trump’s 20-point peace plan in full might lead to ending the conflict abroad. The plan initiates with Hamas’s disarmament and encompasses broader strategies beyond mere reconstruction.
Trump’s 20-point strategy was delivered late last year. It proposes amnesty for Hamas members surrendering their arms, aims to make Gaza a “deradicalized terror-free zone,” and includes economic redevelopment.
The plan states, “If both sides agree to this proposal, the war will immediately end… All military operations… will be suspended, and battle lines will remain frozen until conditions are met for the complete staged withdrawal.”
In January, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff stated that the plan had entered its second phase, preparing for Gaza’s transition “from ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance, and reconstruction.” The administration also established a Board of Peace with Trump at its helm to provide strategic leadership and accountability as Gaza changes from conflict to peace.
