Untitled Vampire Play: A Humorous Adventure at Lookingglass Theatre

1 week ago 0

The Lookingglass Theatre presents Kevin Douglas’s new production, humorously summed up as “Hey, Mom and Dad, My Fiancée is a Vampire!” The show offers a vibrant escape for vampire enthusiasts without the steep Broadway ticket prices.

The narrative begins with Dom, a young Chicagoan played by Jordan Arredondo, introducing his charming girlfriend, Val, portrayed by Courtney Rikki Green, to his witty father Louie (Kareem Bandealy) and his mother Alicia (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams), a Chicago police officer. Val’s claim of being an ancient vampire who altered history with her bites sets the tone. Douglas deftly uses humor, focusing on the parents’ attempts to adapt to Val’s unusual nature.

Val is trying to improve her ways by choosing blood bags over direct feeding, yet her struggle persists. The play’s initial scene might leave audiences wishing for more of the comical parental interactions. The plot soon expands to reveal Val’s past and her relationship with her acolyte, Rose (Jin Park). As a gaming icon, Rose seeks liberation from her vampire life.

The story introduces Val’s brother, Roderick (Walter Briggs), whose arrival stirs the plot. Pursued by a determined vampire hunter, depicted by Bandealy with a vibrant attitude, Roderick represents classic vampire traits. The play’s setting shifts, blending procedural elements with sitcom vibes suited for Michigan Avenue in summer.

Director Devon De Mayo leads a lively production with a creative set by Alyssa Mohn. Performances are notable, particularly Green’s portrayal of Val with a retro Wonder Woman flair, thanks to Theresa Ham’s costume design. Park’s depiction of the gamer-vampire is equally engaging.

The play’s charm lies in seamlessly integrating vampires into the everyday life of Chicago. Douglas ensures the portrayal meets audience expectations, maintaining brevity and humor. Audience members wary of splatter effects should avoid front-row seating.

A final recommendation for the theatre: Enhancing their signage could attract more passersby, increasing awareness of the fun contained within the historical Water Tower Pumping Station.
