Cornell University is investigating reports that a student, Austin Franco, rejected an internship from Jewish-owned startup VryfID with a discriminatory remark. Franco reportedly refused the offer, stating he was ‘not interested in working for a Jew,’ which has led to widespread outrage.
The concern was discussed by the ‘Outnumbered’ panel, stressing the importance for parents and educational institutions to combat rising hate and discrimination on campuses. Questions arise about the origins of ingrained prejudices among the younger generation.
Cornell University has initiated an inquiry following Franco’s reported comment on the job application platform, Handshake. The student had initially applied for a summer internship with VryfID, founded by Gabe and Aiden Einhorn. The startup focuses on connecting renters with landlords while ensuring identity verification to prevent fraud.
“Hi Austin, I know Sundays are not ideal for meetings, but I would like to have a quick call to share more details about our company and its mission,” Aiden Einhorn wrote.
Franco’s reported response was, “Not interested in working for a Jew. Thanks.” This prompted VryfID to take action and publicize the exchange.
In response, Franco reportedly stated, “My experiences with Jews have not been pleasant overall, although there have been exceptions.” He further commented that the public reaction has only reinforced his beliefs.
Cornell University’s Office of Civil Rights has launched an investigation under university policies. The university reaffirmed its condemnation of antisemitism and hate in all forms, striving to create a safe and inclusive environment.
Gabe Einhorn, co-founder of VryfID, spoke with Fox News, warning against the dangers of overgeneralizing groups based on religion or race.
“There’s too much hate in the world and overgeneralizing race or religion isn’t helpful,” he remarked.
This incident underscores the persistence of antisemitism and its impact. Gabe Einhorn shared the evidence online to counter claims denying antisemitism.
Franco, initially scheduled to speak on X Space, opted out, stating his commitment to his beliefs and awaiting Cornell’s investigation outcome.
