In recent times, President Trump and his allies have questioned the integrity of American democracy. He referred to the California primary election as ‘rigged,’ and federal authorities recently targeted an Ohio voter registration group.
Yet, there are actions everyone can take now to ensure the strength and growth of our democratic systems. My experience as the former chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party offers insights into this issue. Wisconsin transformed from a ‘democracy desert’ into a key swing state, demonstrating the potential for nationwide change.
Success on a national scale requires collective efforts to remodel our democracy into one that guarantees free and fair elections. It demands commitment from Democrats, independents, and Republicans alike to establish a robust political framework.
Influencing a voter’s decision is challenging, yet not impossible. Recent electoral outcomes show that only a small number of votes can shift power. For instance, in 2024, a mere 7,309 votes in key districts resulted in Republicans securing the House majority.
To preserve our democracy, focused action and collaboration are essential. We must work towards building a democratic order that upholds fairness and equality for all political participants.
