Historic U.S. Victory Over Paraguay in World Cup

2 weeks ago 0

The United States made soccer history by defeating Paraguay 4-1 in a World Cup match, marking the first time the U.S. scored more than four goals in a World Cup game. This victory was not only significant because of the scoreline but also highlighted individual achievements. Folarin Balogun became the first American since 1930 to score multiple goals in a World Cup match. The win against Paraguay marked the first time the U.S. won a World Cup game by three goals since 1930, coincidentally also against Paraguay.

The match, played in Southern California, kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign for Team USA. Balogun, a key player, scored twice, marking a memorable debut in his World Cup journey. The U.S. team started strong with an early 3-0 lead, scoring their first goal within seven minutes of the match. Despite the lead, they continued to push for more. Even after U.S. captain Christian Pulisic was injured, Paraguay managed to score in the 73rd minute. However, Gio Reyna sealed the historic win with a fourth goal in the final seconds, securing three points in the World Cup standings.

The scoring spree began with an own goal by Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla in the sixth minute, granting the U.S. an early advantage. The excitement in SoFi Stadium was palpable as U.S. fans celebrated their team’s strong performance.

Balogun tapped into his potential with his first World Cup goal in the 30th minute, increasing the lead. This was the third-fastest time the U.S. team reached a two-goal advantage in a World Cup, only behind matches against Portugal in 2002 and Paraguay in 1930. Before halftime, Balogun capitalized on a precise pass from teammate Malik Tillman, hitting the top-left corner with his shot.

Balogun’s journey to this achievement has been unique. Born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents and raised in London, he joined the Arsenal academy after being discovered at age eight. He faced a decision to play internationally for either the U.S. or England. A positive experience with American fans in 2023 helped him choose the U.S. team. Balogun has since emerged as a star player, contributing significantly to what could be a memorable World Cup for the U.S. on home soil.
