The 2026 World Cup opening ceremony was a star-studded event at Mexico City’s stadium. International icons like Shakira, Maná, Andrea Bocelli, and a surprise appearance by Salma Hayek thrilled fans and set the stage for the match between Mexico and South Africa.

Shakira performed ‘Dai Dai’, the official song of the 2026 World Cup, alongside Burna Boy. Known for her hit ‘Waka Waka (This Is Africa)’ in the 2010 World Cup, she aims to recreate that impact with ‘Dai Dai’. Shakira stated the importance of rhythm and unity in a great World Cup song, calling it essential for audience engagement. Her extensive World Cup performances include Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014. She is also set to perform at the halftime show of the 2026 final in New Jersey with Madonna and BTS.

Mexican singer Lila Downs welcomed fans and players in multiple languages, including Indigenous ones. Emphasizing the country’s cultural diversity and pride, Downs expressed her support for Mexico’s team.
