U.S. Soccer Team Begins Training in Irvine
With the World Cup opener approaching, the U.S. soccer team has settled into its temporary base in Irvine, California. Players were greeted by thousands of local fans eager to witness their practice sessions. The team announced Orange County Great Park as its base for the initial stage of the tournament, leading the City of Irvine to raffle passes for the public workout.
Monday’s practice attracted significant attention, with 32,000 applicants for 5,500 available passes. The session lasted 45 minutes and marked the return of Chris Richards, who had been sidelined due to a torn left ankle ligament. Richards sustained the injury while playing for Crystal Palace, his club team in England. The team hopes to have Richards ready to participate during the group stage.
Training at Championship Soccer Stadium
The venue for the practice was Championship Soccer Stadium, located around 50 miles from the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, where the U.S. team is set to face Paraguay on Friday. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed gratitude for the facilities, stating they exceeded expectations.
The city owns Championship Soccer Stadium and has leased it to the Orange County Soccer Club, part of the USL Championship. The club vacated the venue to accommodate the national team, a decision embraced by its business president Dan Rutstein, who expressed pride in hosting the U.S. team.
History and Development of The Great Park
The Great Park thrives on a 500-acre complex, formerly Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, operational for 56 years up to 1999. In 2001, voters approved transforming the site into a public park equipped with sports facilities.
Nestled within it are amenities such as volleyball and basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball fields, and an ice arena. The park boasts 25 soccer fields, including a new FIFA-standard field.
The vision behind The Great Park aimed to rival national icons like San Diego’s Balboa Park. Mayor Larry Agran described the park development as a meticulous endeavor that involved extensive nurturing and effort. Hosting the World Cup team also took considerable planning, with initiatives starting five years prior to the tournament.
Securing Irvine as a Training Base
After initiating talks in 2019, Irvine was shortlisted as a potential host in 2024. Teams visited the site for evaluation while Sam Zapatka from the USMNT explored facilities across the West Coast. Following his initial visit, the Great Park was selected as the training base, announced in March.
Monday’s gathering saw players welcomed enthusiastically by fans cheering and chanting. Several photographs capturing the atmosphere featured players like Weston McKennie and coach Mauricio Pochettino interacting with fans.
Team captain Tim Ream shared his amazement at the turnout, noting the excitement and support from the community. The team looks forward to training in a conducive environment, bolstered by passionate local support.
The welcoming reception marks a promising start as the U.S. team prepares for its World Cup journey.
