3 weeks ago 0

In Peoria, tears mixed with sweat as senior right-hander Abby Brueggmann celebrated a significant career milestone. Lincoln-Way West’s pitcher showed emotion following a pivotal victory, proving her capabilities in the high-pressure game. “I didn’t think I was good enough for these games,” Brueggmann admitted. Her performance on Friday spoke volumes, helping secure a 2-1 win over Marist during the Class 4A state semifinal at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

Brueggmann struck out four and left eight runners stranded for her team, Lincoln-Way West (29-7). St. Xavier recruit Abby Brueggmann (15) prepared to face Marist, supported by key plays from her teammates. Reese Forsythe hit a crucial triple, and Reese Rourke, committed to NC State, made a daring steal home. Despite heavy hitters on both sides, Brueggmann maintained her composure on the mound.

Marist, boasting Notre Dame recruit Layla Peters and Saint Louis recruit Ellie Holmstrom’s efforts, fell short despite Wisconsin commit Soleil Tate’s six strikeouts. The loss for Marist (36-2) came as a surprise, especially after they dominated the Warriors 11-5 on March 30. Brueggmann expressed determination, focused on overcoming the season’s top team and clinching the title.

Maddie Rogers, another star player for Marist, contributed two hits but couldn’t shift the game’s outcome.

Lincoln-Way West faced Mundelein, holding a record of 23-5, in the state championship game on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. Their strategy throughout was to play with confidence and aggression. Brueggmann highlighted the importance of maintaining a loose approach, noting how the pressure shifted to Marist as Lincoln-Way West gained momentum each inning.

On Friday, Marist continually placed runners in scoring positions. They capitalized only once through Holmstrom’s double and an RBI squeeze bunt from Alia Rowles. In contrast, Lincoln-Way West made full use of their opportunities, scoring early through a double steal and adding another run later with Forsythe’s triple.

Brueggmann faced challenges with Marist runners frequently on base but managed to limit their advances, aided by strong defense. She struck out a key player to end the fifth with a runner on second and concluded the seventh with another strikeout, despite a runner on third.

Forsythe, reflecting on the tense moments, appreciated the chance to catch for Brueggmann. “It’s an honor,” Forsythe shared. Her support was evident as she encouraged Brueggmann throughout the game.

Lincoln-Way West coach Heather Novak praised Brueggmann’s resilience, acknowledging her ability to handle tough lineups like Marist’s. Novak noted, “Her growth over four years is impressive, and she trusts both herself and her team.” Throughout the postseason, challenging matches required the Warriors to execute well defensively, an area where they excelled.

Tony Baranek, reporting for the Daily Southtown, highlighted Brueggmann’s contribution as a testament to her development as a key player for Lincoln-Way West.
