Australia Seizes Large Haul of Illegal Exotic Cockroaches

3 weeks ago 0

In a significant enforcement action, officials in Australia have confiscated over 100,000 live cockroaches, illegal to keep in the country. This marks the largest seizure of exotic invertebrates to date. The species involved include Madagascar hissing cockroaches and dubia cockroaches, valued at 200,000 Australian dollars ($142,000). The operation took place in May, targeting a commercial breeder in Bathurst, New South Wales, as reported by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water.

The Madagascar hissing cockroach is among the world’s largest cockroaches, with a length ranging from 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters). Photographs from the department depict this shiny, brown insect, which is larger than a person’s finger. In contrast, Australia’s common cockroach species typically measure 0.9 to 1.4 inches (2.3 to 3.6 centimeters) long. Due to the country’s sub-tropical climate, Australia hosts hundreds of cockroach species.

Stefanie Lesser, a snake catcher in Bathurst, mentioned to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that the larger exotic cockroaches might be sold as a cost-efficient food source for reptiles, given their size reduces the quantity needed. However, officials encourage using crickets or wood roaches for feeding lizards.

Both Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches are illegal to import and possess in Australia, regardless of the acquisition method, as per the department’s statement. Australia maintains stringent biosecurity measures at its borders to prevent potential threats to agriculture, horticulture, and native wildlife due to pest entry. Individuals caught smuggling undeclared animals, insects, or plants may face significant fines.

“Exotic cockroaches have not been subject to an environmental risk assessment and could pose disease risks or harm native species,” stated the department.

Authorities warn of potential legal action against those found with these invertebrates. Despite the seizure, no charges were filed against the Bathurst breeder, but the confiscated cockroaches will be euthanized.
