Graham Platner, a prominent Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, is currently under increased examination due to past actions. Recently, he visited Washington to engage with Senate Democrats, although his reception was somewhat apprehensive. Mr. Platner is challenging Senator Susan Collins, a seasoned Republican with five terms under her belt.
Mr. Platner extended an invitation for an afternoon meeting to the entire Senate Democratic caucus. However, only a small group of about six senators attended. Prior to this, Mr. Platner had a one-on-one meeting with Senator Chuck Schumer from New York, who serves as the minority leader. This information comes from two sources informed about the meeting. Initially, Mr. Schumer had supported Mr. Platner’s primary opponent, who halted her campaign a month ago.
When addressing reporters at the Capitol, Mr. Schumer sidestepped inquiries regarding Mr. Platner after reports surfaced alleging that he sent unsolicited sexual messages to women outside his marriage. These reports have heightened concerns among Democrats, with worries that more issues could arise regarding Mr. Platner’s political history.
“I met with Graham Platner today,” Mr. Schumer stated. “Our focus is on defeating Susan Collins and reclaiming the Senate.” Mr. Schumer reiterated that Democrats were determined to beat Ms. Collins and mentioned endorsing Mr. Platner, subsequently leaving the press interaction.
