Republican Senate candidate Rep. Ashley Hinson from Iowa privately admitted that the U.S. conflict with Iran might turn into a “political liability” if it extends beyond several weeks. This was revealed during a campaign event in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on May 28. The audio, obtained by CBS News, includes Hinson addressing a voter’s questions about the war and the possibility of a military draft.
Hinson expressed her hope for a quick resolution, noting, “I do hope we can get this done by the next couple of weeks. If it drags on beyond that, it’s a political liability for us too. Because we’ve lost Iowa soldiers.” She mentioned attending four funerals of Iowa service members since December, underscoring her concerns.
When asked about a timeline for ending the conflict, Hinson said she defers to President Trump and his foreign policy team. They are working on a deal with Iran to extend the ceasefire and initiate talks on Iran’s nuclear program. April saw a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, but sporadic clashes persist, impacting global oil markets as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slows significantly.
Hinson emphasized that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is crucial, stating, “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. At the end of the day, that’s what I want to say on that.” Regarding the potential for a military draft, she noted she had heard no such plans, aligning this with the White House’s earlier position that no draft is planned.
“We don’t need one,” she commented, “I hope we don’t need one.” Despite worries about the conflict’s length and political ramifications, Hinson reported steadfastness among the families of fallen Iowa soldiers she visited. She remarked that these families urge seeing the mission through, “Even in their grief.”
Hinson will challenge Democratic nominee Josh Turek in November to fill the Iowa Senate seat, as Republican Sen. Joni Ernst is not seeking re-election. This race is a critical one for determining Senate control in 2026.
A spokesperson for Hinson stated: “Of course endless wars are unpopular—no one wants them, and thankfully, President Trump is doing everything he can to prevent one while keeping Americans safe.”
