NHL free agency starts on Wednesday. This offseason is unusual, with more buzz around trade requests than free agent signings. One of the most unexpected developments involves Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski.
Werenski, who recently secured the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman, asked for a trade. His request surprised many, including his head coach. Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness expressed his disbelief over Werenski’s trade request.
“I’m as shocked as anyone that these came up,” Bowness said, according to The Athletic. “I mean, at the end of the year meetings, we looked each other in the eye and had great meetings and gave each other a hug leaving.”
Bowness added that everything seemed positive, making Werenski’s decision unexpected. Werenski has a contract through the 2027-28 season. He is not alone in seeking a move. Forward Kirill Marchenko also requested a change of scenery.
The end of the Blue Jackets’ season was difficult, impacting their playoff hopes. Despite these challenges, Werenski’s trade request is surprising, given his recent achievements.
While a player wanting to leave is challenging for the team, Werenski’s Norris Trophy win enhances his trade value. If Columbus can arrange a deal, they are likely to receive substantial compensation, as talent like Werenski’s is rare.
