Young Woman’s Skin Cancer Experience Highlights Unusual Symptom

A 26-year-old woman from Connecticut, Chloë Bourgoin, shared her journey of undergoing surgery for skin cancer in an effort to raise awareness about its symptoms. She emphasized how routine skin checks can be crucial. Bourgoin recounted her story to Newsweek, mentioning she had never prioritized regular skin examinations until after her last check in 2018. She admits she was unaware that an itch could be an indicator of skin cancer.

Bourgoin noted that the appearance of the mole was recent, suspecting it developed over the past three years based on photographs. It seemed normal until she experienced itching on her lower leg towards the end of 2025. A search on the internet revealed that this itch might be dangerous. A visit to her dermatologist confirmed her worst fear.

The mole located just above her ankle was identified as malignant melanoma. According to the Mayo Clinic, this type of skin cancer originates in the pigment cells and tends to develop in sun-exposed areas. The American Academy of Dermatology Association states that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with diagnosis rates increasing significantly over the past three decades. Excessive UV radiation exposure from sunlight or tanning beds, along with a personal history of skin cancer, raises the risk.

Sunburns during childhood or adolescence are particularly concerning as they can heighten the risk of melanoma, which often presents signs like a strangely shaped mole, changes in color or size, unusual borders, or symptoms like itchiness or bleeding.

Bourgoin later discovered a family history of melanoma on her maternal side, increasing her susceptibility. Following her diagnosis, she underwent a biopsy and subsequent excision surgery. This procedure removes not only the melanoma but also a margin of healthy skin to ensure complete removal of cancer cells, significantly reducing the chance of recurrence.

The surgery left her “missing a chunk of my leg,” as shown in a video she shared. The extra skin was taken from around the affected area. Her efforts paid off as Bourgoin confirmed her recovery, stating, “My recovery has been going well, and I am now cancer-free!”
