Woman’s Bug Bite Leads to Severe Health Complications

Emma Selvidge, 19, experienced a surprising and alarming health issue beginning with a small lump on her forehead that she initially thought was a bug bite. Her story includes multiple hospital stays, surgeries, and temporary loss of vision.

On April 2, Selvidge woke up at 3 a.m. with the lump and went to urgent care the next day, suspecting a bite. Doctors thought it might be a spider bite and treated her for a possible infection. She received an antibiotic shot and was sent home.

However, within minutes, the swelling worsened and spread to her eye. Concerned as her vision started to blur, she headed to the ER after work. A CT scan was done due to the suspicion of an abscess, and MRSA was considered.

Selvidge eventually underwent surgery to drain the abscess. During this procedure, doctors also found an unrelated tonsil issue, potentially requiring future surgery. This was her first surgery, and the experience frightened her, but it went smoothly. Despite improvement, vision complications persisted.

After being discharged on April 5, Selvidge thought her ordeal was over. Unfortunately, about a month later, the swelling returned, leading to severe sinus infections and headaches. It occurred a third time shortly after, increasing her fear and uncertainty, as the cause remained unclear.

Further tests revealed mild stenosis of the right transverse sinus and a narrowing of a vein draining blood from her brain. Though it provided some insight, it didn’t explain the recurrences or offer a clear treatment plan.

Selvidge’s recovery involves enduring daily headaches, a sore throat, and ongoing vision issues. She is using medication to alleviate sinus symptoms, though recovery is slower than hoped.

This experience changed her life, transforming a suspected bug bite into numerous hospital stays and health challenges. The lack of definite answers adds to her anxiety due to the fear of recurrence.
