Wildfires Rage Across Southern Europe: Challenges and Responses

In Southern Europe, wildfires have become a persistent threat, with countries like Portugal, Greece, and Spain battling multiple blazes. On Sunday, reinforcements came from Spain and Italy to assist Portugal’s struggle against a major fire that had been burning for over three days.

Portugal’s Battle Against Wildfires

Portugal’s Vouzela area faced a significant challenge. Over 1,200 firefighters supported by 400 vehicles and 15 aircraft have been engaged since Thursday in combatting a wildfire that spread across 12,000 hectares. The EU’s Copernicus satellite mapping reported these figures, and the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid noted assistance from Spain and Italy. While progress was noted by Sunday afternoon, some hot spots persisted.

Spain’s Precarious Situation

In Spain, a blaze in the Girona region has charred nearly 2,200 hectares since Friday. The Catalan Fire Service, led by Eduard Martinez, remarked on a wide perimeter of 40 kilometers. Control of the fire appeared challenging, but efforts continued throughout the day.

Greece Faces Toxic Smoke

Greece confronted a separate issue with toxic smoke from a recycling plant fire in Thessaloniki. Residents in certain areas were advised to stay indoors. A major wildfire erupted west of Athens, deploying 155 firefighters and a range of aircraft to control the flames within the Mandra area’s pine forest.

A water-dropping plane tackled the blaze at Oreokastro, contributing to the firefight. Reports suggested damage to businesses and homes, though fuller assessments awaited completion.

Common Causes and Efforts in Greece

Brig. Ioannis Artopoios emphasized negligence as a primary cause of wildfires in Greece, citing sparks from machinery and discarded cigarettes. About 85% of wildfires could potentially be avoided, suggesting a need for increased awareness and preventative measures.

During Greece’s hot and dry summers, wildfires are notoriously frequent and destructive. Notable past fires in 2018 and 2023 highlight the risk. Technology is being harnessed with four satellites in low orbit, aimed at improving wildfire monitoring. Despite Western Europe’s recent heatwaves, Greece’s experience has varied, yet fires remain a consistent challenge.
