Wildfire Threatens Reno Neighborhoods, Prompts Mass Evacuation

In Reno, Nevada, a wildfire that rapidly expanded over the weekend in the Sierra Nevada foothills has forced authorities to advise over 90,000 residents to evacuate. As the fire endangers neighborhoods near the city’s edge, officials warn that shifting winds could propel the flames into densely populated areas.

The blaze has already consumed several homes. In response, schools throughout the county were closed on Monday to clear the roads for emergency operations. Officials reported late Sunday that the Hawk Fire remained within its current perimeters. Fire crews are focusing on extinguishing hotspots and preventing the fire from leaping a main highway, threatening nearby homes and businesses.

The fire ignited on Saturday and swiftly expanded to cover more than 23 square miles by Sunday. Situated near the California state line, the area remains uncontained. At least six individuals, including three first responders and three civilians, sustained injuries.

Authorities stated the fire is “human-caused” but have not specified whether it was started intentionally or accidentally. Videos on social media reveal charred remnants of homes and vehicles, with little left standing except a singed basketball hoop.

“Honestly, I thought it was like in a movie,” said resident Ruby Delatorre, after returning from a concert to find her home in an evacuation zone. She returned Sunday to collect more belongings, stating, “I literally want to cry and go back for all my stuff. I just got what I thought I needed.”

Teresa Lenshyn, another evacuee, described the evacuation process as chaotic and taxing. “You don’t know if the winds are going to shift and it’s going to get worse,” she expressed.

The Hawk Fire marks the third significant wildfire in the rugged region north of Reno within two weeks. Each incident has been linked to human activities, according to fire authorities. Prolonged dry conditions across the American West have incited a surge of wildfires this summer.

For example, in eastern Washington state, fires prompted the evacuation of 60,000 residents in the Spokane area earlier in August. Nationally, over 50,000 wildfires have occurred this year, marking the highest number in the past decade, per the National Interagency Fire Center.
