WHO Declares Global Health Emergency Over Congo Ebola Outbreak

1 month ago 0

The World Health Organization has declared a global health emergency due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. This decision follows reports of nearly 80 deaths in Congo.

Current Situation
The CDC has stated that as of Sunday, there are more than 330 suspected cases, with nearly 90 fatalities in Congo. The outbreak initially emerged in the country’s northeastern Ituri Province. Laboratory tests have confirmed only ten cases as Ebola-related, while Uganda has reported two confirmed instances.

International Concern
The WHO has characterized the outbreak as a ‘public health emergency of international concern.’ Efforts are underway to evacuate a small group of Americans affected by the situation, as noted by the CDC on Sunday.

Ebola Virus Details
The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. This strain is uncommon, has fewer field tests available, and lacks specific vaccines or treatments, which may complicate efforts to manage the spread.

What is Ebola?
Ebola is caused by a group of viruses, referred to as orthoebolaviruses. It was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River, in areas now known as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Zaire Ebola virus is the most prevalent species.
