Wander Franco Exempted from Punishment in Abuse Case

4 weeks ago 0

Wander Franco, shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays, was found criminally responsible for the sexual and psychological abuse of a minor. However, a Dominican judge ruled he will not face a sentence. The decision came from Judge José Antonio Núñez, who noted Franco was a victim of extortion and blackmail by the minor’s mother. She received a 10-year prison sentence for sexually trafficking her daughter.

It seems contradictory to declare criminal responsibility and at the same time exempt him from punishment. Núñez explained the judicial pardon given to Franco as both logical and grounded in legal reasoning.

Franco expressed gratitude, saying, Thank God for everything, and embraced his family in court. In January 2024, he was arrested due to allegations of a four-month relationship with a 14-year-old girl, during which he transferred substantial money to her mother for her consent.

After the ruling, Franco left the courthouse, accompanied by his lawyer Teodosio Jáquez. Franco told reporters that he felt calm and urged his fans to continue supporting and trusting him. Franco mentioned he had not personally contacted the Rays, but his lawyers had likely done so.

Major League Baseball acknowledged the verdict, stating they will conclude their investigation at a suitable time.

Franco’s attorney, Jáquez, mentioned they had yet to receive the full sentence in writing but noted that the exemption came as the court also recognized Franco as a victim. The complete sentencing details will be available on June 16. Jáquez emphasized the need for the physical sentence to provide more information.

In November 2021, Franco signed a significant 11-year, $182 million contract with the Rays. His career faced disruption when investigations began in August 2023 in the Dominican Republic. At 22, Franco was placed on the restricted list, affecting his payments while on administrative leave, six months after his arrest.
