Vita Vea Requests Trade from Buccaneers Amid Contract Dispute

In a surprising development, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade. Vea, who was instrumental in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl victory in 2021, is seeking a fresh opportunity as contract extension talks have stalled. He is in the final year of a four-year, $71 million contract signed in 2022, and has been advocating for an extension throughout the offseason.

Vea, originally from California, has garnered interest from several West Coast teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay has expressed a lack of interest in pursuing Vea. McVay commented, “He’s a stud. I think that he is a great player that’s always been a problem to game plan against, but I think we feel good about our group right now,” during the “Up & Adams” show.

Despite McVay’s comments, the Rams are focused on a Super Bowl push, having made notable roster changes earlier in the offseason. They acquired Myles Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, setting a league record with 23 sacks over 17 games. The Rams are considering various options to strengthen their team, which includes potentially bringing back Aaron Donald, showcasing their willingness to enhance their defensive lineup.

Vea, aged 31, experienced a slight dip in performance last season with the Buccaneers, recording 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery in 17 games. Despite this, he maintains a consistent record with five consecutive seasons of four or more sacks. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 70.2 placed him 20th among tackles last year, along with 51 total pressures, ranking seventh in the NFL.

Adding Vea to the Rams’ existing roster of Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Braden Fiske, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman would fortify their defensive strength. A key consideration now is what the Rams could offer in a trade, including a long-term deal that aligns with Vea’s aspirations.
