Visitors Embrace Nonpartisan Spirit at Trump’s Great American State Fair

The persistent gray skies on Saturday did not deter visitors attending the inaugural weekend of President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair. This event, held on the National Mall, marks America’s 250th anniversary. The fair presents food and culture booths from all 56 states and territories. Federal government agencies have set up displays in temporary halls along the Mall, offering shelter during intermittent morning drizzles.

Central to the festivities is a towering Ferris wheel. Nearby stands a smaller version of an arch that Trump envisions as a permanent fixture in the capital. This arch is among several projects Trump aims to implement in Washington, D.C. He also plans to repaint the Reflecting Pool and include his name alongside John F. Kennedy’s on the Kennedy Center. While some initiatives have sparked legal disputes, a federal judge recently ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the arts center. Moreover, the Reflecting Pool, intended to be ‘American flag blue,’ has encountered algae and paint issues.

The state fair, highly promoted by Trump and his administration, has faced criticism for perceived partisanship in a bipartisan celebration. Attendees on Saturday from diverse political backgrounds shared that the fair’s atmosphere felt apolitical. Pamela L., visiting from Virginia Beach, expressed that the event was purely American, absent of political bias.

Nicole Briggs and Heather Hatter traveled from Virginia to experience the fair with their children. They, too, found no political overtones. Briggs remarked that the event was unique for their generation, and Hatter praised its patriotic tone.

The 16-day fair began with an opening ceremony on Thursday, hosted by Trump. The festivities included a performance by Lee Greenwood and military bands, followed by a speech highlighting American pride and future aspirations.

There was controversy last month when several music acts withdrew from the event, citing political concerns. Despite this, attendees noted a nonpartisan environment. Daniela Guerrero, a local, expected a political slant but found a mix of tourists celebrating freedom.

Some states, notably those with Democratic leadership, chose not to send delegations, citing costs and concerns about partisanship. Oregon’s Governor Tina Kotek declined participation, as did similar states, attributing their decisions to financial and political considerations.

Visiting from North Carolina, Lynn Frank expressed disappointment over her state’s choice not to participate. She believed state fairs should transcend politics.
