Victor Wembanyama Accepts Responsibility for Spurs’ NBA Finals Loss

Victor Wembanyama has taken full responsibility for the San Antonio Spurs’ recent loss in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. The defeat marks them as the third team in NBA history to lose the first two Finals games at home. The game featured both a significant comeback and a dramatic collapse, ending in a 105-104 loss to the New York Knicks. This unfortunate event is likely to remain vivid for Wembanyama.

In the fourth quarter, San Antonio faced a 14-point deficit after giving up a prior double-digit advantage. They managed a 14-0 run to even the score, and Wembanyama briefly gave them the lead with a three-point play just under a minute to go.

“I need to have more poise,” Wembanyama admitted. “More control over the game.”

With about 14 seconds on the clock, Jalen Brunson of the Knicks squared off against Wembanyama, the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year. Brunson’s 16-foot jumper hit the rim, allowing Wembanyama to grab the rebound. He then attempted a pass to teammate Stephon Castle, who was unprepared. This mistake allowed Brunson to recover the ball, and Wembanyama fouled him, sending Brunson to the free-throw line. Brunson made one of his two shots, giving the Knicks a one-point lead.

Wembanyama attempted a game-winning jumper but missed, securing the Knicks’ 2-0 series lead. He expressed his regret for the mistake and vowed to use the experience as motivation for the next game.

This series is especially significant as Madison Square Garden will host an NBA Finals game for the first time since 2000, with Game 3 expected to be the priciest sporting event in history. Tickets on the secondary market are priced around $12,000.

The Spurs now face a challenging situation. The 1993 Phoenix Suns and 1995 Orlando Magic similarly fell into a 2-0 home deficit during the Finals and did not recover. The pressure is on San Antonio to change that narrative.
