Vandalism on the National Mall Investigated by U.S. Park Police

The National Park Service launched a criminal investigation after observing numbers stained into the grass near the Washington Monument. These numbers were visible from a webcam atop the monument. The stained grass is part of a recent trend in demonstrations using a slang term that the Trump administration asserts suggests an assassination.

On June 11, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET, the National Mall, known as one of the nation’s most prominent gathering areas, faced vandalism. The U.S. Park Police discovered the numbers ’86 47′ browned into the lawn, stretching from the Washington Monument to the World War II Memorial.

The term ’86,’ used in slang, signifies removal or elimination. President Trump, who has been in office as both the 45th and 47th president, has been a target in this context according to previous statements from his administration. The stained numbers were notably large, drawing visibility beyond the scene.

Authorities have not determined the method used to discolor the grass. Despite this, it is clear that significant effort was put into this act of vandalism ahead of President Trump’s 80th birthday and an upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship event he plans to host at the White House.
