Chicago White Sox Pitchers Face Challenges Amidst Division Race

Chicago White Sox pitcher Sean Burke experienced physical struggles earlier in August. Describing his outing on August 16 against Detroit, Burke mentioned it was the worst he felt physically, akin to experiencing a ‘dead-arm’ feeling. After consulting with trainers and strength staff, Burke managed to adjust his routine to feel better on pitching days. In his recent start against the New York Mets, he reported feeling ‘really good’ again and is scheduled to start in the series finale against the Texas Rangers.

The White Sox, aiming for a division title, entered Tuesday’s game against the Rangers with a 2.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Manager Will Venable highlighted the team’s commitment to finding ways to win games despite occasional instability in the pitching staff. He emphasized the importance of a productive rotation as the season progresses.

White Sox starters have completed 561 innings, the fewest in the majors, partly due to the use of openers. This places additional workload on the bullpen. For instance, José Urquidy allowed five runs in three innings in an 11-2 loss to the Rangers, marking the second time in three games a starter didn’t reach the fourth inning. Luis Castillo faced similar struggles, with a short appearance against the Mets and an ERA of 5.89 since joining the team.

Despite challenges, Anthony Kay has delivered impressive performances. He boasts a 2.66 ERA over his last four outings, striking out 17 with just four walks over 23 2/3 innings. As for Burke, even though his recent start against the Mets resulted in a loss, he found positives in his six-inning performance with no walks and a high strike percentage.

Relief pitchers like Urquidy and Fedde have taken on significant roles recently. Davis Martin’s placement on the injured list due to a finger blister forced the team to shuffle pitching assignments. Urquidy and Fedde have stepped up as bulk pitchers, helping contain opponents during tight matchups.

In a roster update, reliever Huáscar Brazobán was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left lat strain. The Sox called up right-hander Jonathan Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte. Brazobán’s stint with the team has seen him make 10 relief appearances with a 6.30 ERA. Additionally, outfielder Andrew Benintendi was placed on the bereavement/family medical emergency list, leading to Rikuu Nishida’s recall from Charlotte.
