Vandalism Claims at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

11 hours ago 0

Another individual faced arrest connected to the alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. President Donald Trump announced this development on Tuesday. Through a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that six individuals have been arrested, and seven have received citations due to the damage inflicted on the Reflecting Pool.

The president made multiple assertions regarding vandalism, yet has not supplied evidence to date. Photographs of the pool depict the blue sealant peeling away. Algae growth has tinted the water green. Trump stated that the Interior Department would provide photos of the vandalism soon.

Over the weekend, Trump claimed vandals slashed a 250-foot-long gash into the landmark. In Tuesday’s post, he elaborated, indicating numerous slashes over a 350-foot length had been made with sharp instruments. Further damage involved cutting and lifting a section of the pool, creating jagged edges. Trump suggested the damage was deliberate, likely occurring in the dead of night.

The president highlighted additional concerns that chemicals may have been illegally added to the water. He threatened a potential 10-year prison sentence for those involved in either the destruction or attempted destruction. Relevant authorities like the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and the Interior Department have yet to respond to media inquiries.

Among those implicated in Trump’s vandalism claims was Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn. Hearn reported being arrested for five hours after inspecting a piece of detached coating. He emphasized he did not damage the pool and observed its condition unchanged during his visit.

Hearn alleged his arrest by the National Guard, though he remains uncertain about the charges. Former Department of Justice federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani noted most federal cases involve felonies, not misdemeanors. He suggested the arrests might have been influenced by current political conditions.

Rahmani explained that federal misdemeanors typically result in citations and court appearances. Punishments usually involve up to one year in jail or fines. The president’s comments on a 10-year sentence likely refer to those already arrested.

Trump proposed that some of the Reflecting Pool’s water could be drained before or after July 4th celebrations. He mentioned grass replacement is ongoing around the pool. Despite the issues, Trump confidently described the landmark as beautiful, considering recent renovations.

The reflecting pool, a focus for the president, faced renovations previously labeled as neglected. Algae problems have persisted at this notable site. The recent $14-million-plus rehabilitation included a new liner and coating, christened “American flag blue.”
