At the core, a disappointing winter snowpack reached an unprecedented low. Subsequently, a March heat wave melted the remaining snow, plunging the state into a drought emergency.
As summer approached, Utah experienced dry thunderstorms. These storms, combined with strong winds, led to rapid fire outbreaks by June. One of these fires grew to become the sixth-largest ever recorded in the state’s history.
As an example of the impact, a helicopter was seen dropping water on the Cottonwood Fire near Beaver, Utah, on June 27, illustrating the desperate efforts to control these increasing fires.
