Ukrainian Drone Strikes Highlight Need for Ballistic Missiles

5 days ago 0

Ukrainian drone attacks have recently showcased their potential to make an impact, but experts emphasize that only ballistic missiles could compel Russia to rethink its war strategies.

Recently, social media platforms have been inundated with footage of a significant Ukrainian drone assault on Moscow. These images, showing plumes of smoke rising over the city, suggest that Ukraine has developed the capability to respond to Russian aerial attacks. As President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked, Moscow will suffer in return if Ukraine faces attacks.

However, the success of these drone strikes highlights a more challenging situation. Despite their effectiveness, Ukraine does not possess ballistic missiles, a key component of Russia’s air attack strategy.

Ballistic missiles carry much larger explosive loads compared to drones and are challenging to intercept due to their speed. They have caused significant damage far beyond what drones can achieve alone.

Russian ballistic missile attacks have consistently overpowered Ukrainian air defenses. They significantly disrupted Ukraine’s power grid during the harsh winter months. Currently, Russian air assaults against Ukrainian cities create a substantial imbalance in the conflict, applying significant pressure on Ukraine.

Given this disadvantage, Ukrainian authorities have recently expressed their determination to develop homemade ballistic missiles. Kyiv considers these weapons vital for increasing pressure on Moscow, potentially leading to negotiations.

The introduction of Ukrainian ballistic capability would fundamentally alter the war dynamics, stated Mykhailo Fedorov, the Ukrainian defense minister, in a recent television interview. He stressed that while they do not intend to exaggerate expectations, the development of Ukrainian ballistic missiles is underway and aims to target Russia.
