In the early hours of Tuesday, Ukraine launched an extensive drone attack toward Moscow, Russian authorities report. Over 600 drones were detected heading towards the region, making it the largest such assault in the past two years, according to Russia’s Tass state news agency.
Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that between Monday evening and 5 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 620 drones targeted the broader region. About 180 of these drones, known as uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), were reportedly “destroyed” near Moscow.
Additionally, Andrey Vorobyov, governor of Moscow’s region, claimed that more than 150 drones were downed around the capital.
The attack aimed to highlight the ongoing impact of the extended four-and-a-half-year conflict to the Russian public. Long-range drones have become a repeated tactic used by Ukraine to target the Russian capital.
Russia’s Wildberries, comparable to the online giant Amazon, reported “minor damage” at a logistics site in the Moscow region due to debris hitting the facility’s wall.
The Russian defense ministry stated that air defenses intercepted 791 drones during the night across 15 Russian regions, including over annexed Crimea, and the Azov and Black Seas.
This incident marks one of Ukraine’s largest attacks on Russian territory so far this year, according to Tass.
