Ukraine Renews Strategic Initiative against Russian Forces

6 days ago 0

Ukraine’s Strategic Advances in Donetsk

Amid ongoing conflict, Ukraine has impeded Russian efforts to capture the Donetsk region. Analyses suggest that Ukraine’s forces have regained strategic and operational levels of initiative for the first time in two years. Reports indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin receives inflated battlefield success reports, bolstering his belief in a false victory.

Recent talks with Trump administration officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner revealed Putin’s persistent maximalist war goals. During the last six months, Ukraine has neutralized Russia’s territorial gains and launched counteroffensives in Kupiansk, Oleksandrivka, and Lyman, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Even pro-Kremlin military bloggers acknowledge these successes. Ukraine halted the Russian advance into Dnipropetrovsk, reclaimed ground in Kupiansk, and dismantled a Russian position threatening Slovyansk and Donetsk Oblast Fortress Belt. This fortress belt, comprising fortified cities and defenses, is crucial for Ukraine’s protection of the eastern Donbas region—an essential target for Putin.

Operational Gains and Pro-Russian Blogger Reactions

The ISW highlighted Ukraine’s successful initiative contestation at strategic and operational levels from late 2025 through 2026. This marks the first such regain of control since the August 2024 Kursk Offensive. Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili noted that Ukraine’s 2026 performance surpassed the prior two years, with multiple counteroffensives liberating occupied territories.

Pro-Russian bloggers conceded Ukraine cut off the Russian position north of Lyman, pushing against Russian forces to the Zherebets River between September 9 and 11. The ISW map reflects these developments. Open-source intelligence source Clément Molin confirmed Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps liberated over 77 square miles in the region.

Revishvili noted this achievement alleviates pressure on the Fortress Belt. “This demonstrates maneuver warfare’s viability with strategic planning, precision, and tactical ingenuity,” he stated. Retired Australian Army Major General Mick Ryan called these gains “a positive surprise amid ongoing Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.” Ukraine’s southern operation also liberated around 290 square miles.

Current and Future Challenges

Despite Ukrainian advances, ISW reported minor but significant Russian gains near Kostyantynivka, Slovyansk, and Kramatorsk. As winter approaches, weather changes may impact Ukraine’s defensive visibility, assisting Russian reconnaissance efforts.

Revishvili suggested that Russia may intensify efforts near Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, and Druzhkivka. Gaining a foothold in these areas could provide Russia greater operational reach, enabling concentrated force deployments.

Airspace protection presents another challenge. Russia escalates use of inexpensive strike systems like the S8000 Banderol, jet-powered drones, and various missiles. These fast-moving drones complicate interception efforts, threatening infrastructure and logistics hubs.

Speculation on Russian Mobilization

Speculation persists regarding potential Russian mobilization as troop losses mount. Kremlin sources deny plans for a draft. Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate leader, Lieutenant General Oleh Ivashchenko, highlighted Russian generals’ calls for mobilizing 800,000 additional troops amid rising casualties versus recruitment rates.

ISW doubts Russia can train and integrate such numbers, suggesting gradual mobilization is more probable due to past draft unpopularity.
