Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack on Moscow Amid Elections

In a notable escalation, Ukrainian forces launched over 1,000 drones targeting Russian territory, including a significant number directed at Moscow. The operation coincided with the last day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. Moscow’s mayor labeled the drone strike as the largest attack on the capital yet, resulting in damage to a refinery and a residential building. Two casualties were reported, a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, along with 20 injuries throughout the wider Moscow area.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on social media that a combination of missiles and locally produced drones, such as Flamingo and Pelican, were employed. The primary targets were oil and logistics facilities that are vital to Russia’s war efforts. Kyiv aims to impose financial strain on Russia and influence public opinion regarding Putin’s policies.

The elections represent Russia’s first wartime parliamentary vote, occurring amidst a backdrop of minimal opposition to President Vladimir Putin. Russia proceeded with these elections not just domestically but also in regions annexed from Ukraine and in Crimea, despite Ukraine’s denouncement of these actions as illegal.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported the downing of 1,100 Ukrainian drones, including targets over Crimea and the Black Sea. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that 450 drones were intercepted en route to Moscow. He attributed the attack to an attempt to disrupt the elections, declaring this effort unsuccessful.

Since Russia’s invasion over four years ago, Ukraine has emerged as a frontrunner in military drone technology. It has utilized long-range drones in conjunction with missiles for strategic strikes within Russia. This innovation has captured the attention of international governments and defense industries.
