U.S. Ambassador Criticizes South African Government

52 minutes ago 0

The U.S. ambassador to South Africa, L. Brent Bozell III, expressed strong criticism towards South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa for not condemning chants inciting violence. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Bozell addressed being summoned by South Africa’s foreign ministry for his ‘undiplomatic conduct.’ This marks the third diplomatic rebuke, known as a démarche, from Pretoria in the past nine months since his appointment.

Bozell criticized President Ramaphosa for failing to address issues raised by the Trump administration, including alleged racial discrimination and violence against farmers. He highlighted the tension surrounding the chant ‘Kill the Boer! Kill the farmer!’ as a significant concern. This chant has been cleared by South Africa’s supreme court, according to Ramaphosa, but Bozell argues it constitutes hate speech.

Bozell pointed out the challenges the Afrikaner community faces in South Africa, as well as the nation’s race-based investment policies. He described these policies as detrimental to investment from entities like the U.S., stating, ‘Ask 100% of the world if ‘kill the farmer, kill the Boer’ isn’t hate speech.’ He underlined the stance that even in U.S. democracy, the president frequently disagrees with court decisions.

Moreover, Bozell raised concerns about South Africa’s alignment with countries like Iran, Russia, China, and Cuba. He emphasized the need for South Africa to adopt a non-aligned stance, noting the implications of moving closer to U.S. adversaries on diplomatic relationships.

The U.S. aims to form a dynamic business partnership with South Africa, especially in the mining sector which involves crucial rare earth minerals. Bozell indicated that American firms are ready to invest but are hindered by South Africa’s ownership policies requiring foreign companies to give 30% ownership to local black entrepreneurs.

In summary, Bozell stressed the need for improved U.S.-South Africa relations, acknowledging the current challenges but expressing cautious optimism for resolution and mutual benefit. The ambassador wishes for a de-escalation of tensions and a constructive partnership.
